Abacus Addition: Introduction

  • To add numbers, upper or lower beads are moved towards the bar.

  • Thumb finger is used to move lower beads towards the bar.

  • Index finger is used to move upper bead towards the bar.

Let's calculate (1 + 2) on Abacus

 Add One (+1)
 Add Two (+2)
 Equals Three (3)
Abacus Number 01
 Figure (A)
 Figure (B)
 Figure (C)
  1. As shown in figure (A); add one '1' on units rod of abacus, by moving one lower bead towards the bar.

  2. As shown in figure (B); add two '2' on units rod of abacus, by moving two lower beads together at a time, towards the bar.

  3. As shown in figure (C); Now, count value of the beads that are near and touching the bar it is three '3'.

Let's calculate (3 + 1) on Abacus
 Add Three (+3)
 Add One (+1)
 Equals Four (4)

 Figure (A)
 Figure (B)
 Figure (C)

  1. As shown in figure (A); add three '3' on units rod of abacus, by moving three lower bead together at a time, towards the bar.

  2. As shown in figure (B); add one '1' on units rod of abacus, by moving one lower beads towards the bar.

  3. As shown in figure (C); Now, count value of the beads that are near and touching the bar it is three '4'.

Let's calculate (6 + 2) on Abacus

 Add Six (+ 6)
Add Two (+ 2)  Equals Eight (8)

 Figure (A)
 Figure (B)
 Figure (C)

  1. As shown in figure (A); add six '6' on units rod of abacus, by moving one lower bead and five bead with pinch together at a time, towards the bar.

  2. As shown in figure (B); add two '2' on units rod of abacus, by moving two lower beads together at a time, towards the bar.

  3. As shown in figure (C); Now, count value of the beads that are near and touching the bar it is eight '8'.
